"Breaking News: Why I Took a News Media Detox for the Sake of My Sanity"

ree

This week I learned some very interesting research results about the Boston bombing a few years ago. Studies are showing that people who were not in Boston and the area of the bombing suffered more symptoms of PTSD than those who were personally affected if they watched a lot of news stories on this event. One reason is thought to be due to the underlying mission and methods the news outlets use by triggering emotions of angst, anger and awe in viewers. Their job is to not just report the story but to do it in a way to catch our attention and revving us up. This reminds me of when I was a kid and my father would be yelling at the tv during the news. I actually wondered why my parents watched so much news if it made them mad. And now the news can be watched all day long. We see the same news stories being repeated so we are getting constant stimulus. At some point after 2020, I knew it was time for me to take a news media detox.

In today's fast-paced world, staying updated with the latest news has become an integral part of our daily routine. However, for individuals like myself, grappling with the enduring effects of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the constant bombardment of distressing headlines can be overwhelming, amplifying the burden on our already fragile mental and emotional well-being.

Amidst the unceasing influx of tragic events and distressing updates, I found myself trapped in a vicious cycle of anxiety and heightened stress. It wasn't until I recognized the detrimental impact that the relentless news cycle was having on my body that I made the conscious decision to hit the pause button and embark on a journey of self-preservation.

Stepping away from the constant barrage of news updates was a transformative experience. It allowed me to reclaim a sense of inner calm and tranquility that had long been eclipsed by the turbulence of the media. By deliberately disconnecting from the noise, I began to notice subtle yet significant changes in my overall well-being.

During my media hiatus, I invested time in activities that brought solace and joy, nurturing a sense of peace that had eluded me for so long. Engaging in mindfulness practices, immersing myself in nature, and fostering meaningful connections with loved ones became pivotal in my healing process. By creating a sanctuary of positivity and serenity, I gradually started to rebuild my resilience and regain control over my mental state.

It can be possible to reenter the realm of news consumption with a newfound perspective and a heightened sense of awareness. Establishing healthy boundaries and consciously filtering the information you absorb can enable you to protect your mental health while staying informed. Acknowledging the importance of self-care and prioritizing my well-being became non-negotiable in my journey towards holistic healing.

If you find yourself grappling with the repercussions of constant media exposure and battling the lingering effects of PTSD, consider taking a deliberate step back to safeguard your mental and emotional equilibrium. Embrace the power of self-care and cultivate a nurturing environment that fosters healing and rejuvenation. Remember, your well-being is paramount, and it is essential to prioritize your peace of mind above all else.
